Kak Terra Kurnia has been practicing silat since he was 10 years old. He currently is the first full-time instructor focused on developing the youth program. He has taught hundreds of youth and has helped establish the Virginia school. Kak Terra specializes in the Bunga or artistic aspects of Silat and has won many first place trophies in forms division as well as World Champion in breaking. His remarkable flexibility and agility has encouraged many students to also excel in these areas, which is especially important in the art of Pencak Silat. He has a good relationship with many of the local karate tournament promoters. His cheerful and soft personality makes him a favorite for many of the children studying Silat. Kak Terra dedication to Pencak Silat is remarkable as he dedicated his entire time to development and promotion of Pencak Silat in the USA.

Kak Abdul-Malik has been practicing Al-Azhar Pencak Silat for over 19 years since he was 15 years old. He was the founder of the ASBD Virginia branch in 1999 and has taught over 100 students. Kak Abdul-Malik has studied in Indonesia and competed in internationally in martial arts competitions and has won first place in many tournaments. He also has a strong business background and has around a half-dozen LLC and business to his name.
Having a strong background in graphic design and web-development and is also is familiar with the business side of developing a lasting business plan in the arts due to his affiliation with the internationally acclaimed music group Native Deen. Kak Abdul-Malik’s specialty is sparring and regular train and spars with Silat fighters in ASBD as well as practitioners in other styles.


 

Wona Sumantri, BS, MIS

Head Instructor – Pelatih Madya

Kak Wona Sumantri has been studying Pencak Silat for over 25 years and comes from
a family of Pencak Silat practitioners. His native roots are of Sundanese ethnicity. He
was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and raised in the USA. He has an understanding of both
Indonesian and American cultures and is well known in the Pencak Silat community
throughout the USA. His knowledge of the technical aspects of Silat draws respect from Silat practitioners from different styles. He has also worked reverently to advance and harmonize the curriculums in Jakarta and the USA so that students are advancing and learning at a similar place. He has received his Masters in Information Systems and is astute to the latest technological advances in that could be used in the spread of Pencak Silat. Kak Wona travels frequently to Indonesia to study with masters from Al-Azhar headquarters and to study with the masters from different Silat systems. He frequently performs demonstrations at various local events and gives seminars. Kak Wona is considered by many to be foremost authority on Pencak Silat in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
